Giving a Face to the Past: Museum Works with FBI Forensic Artist to Bring History to Life

The National Museum of Health and Medicine (NMHM) provides educational programs and collects and exhibits artifacts, specimens, and archival materials related to the process of human identification with a specific focus on its role in military medicine. Specimens in the museum’s Anatomical Collections aid biological and forensic anthropologists and students who are interested in studying human variation as well as how trauma and pathology affect the human body. These collections are also used by staff who may be called as consultants in forensic cases, interns who plan to go into the field of forensics, and other military and civilian professionals who are interested in understanding how biological anthropology contributes to human identification.
