Empowering Future STEM Leaders with DoD Scholarships
In recognition of National Scholarship Month, we’re shining a light on scholarship programs funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) that are designed to empower future STEM leaders. These programs not only provide financial support but also open doors to impactful careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
DoD STEM scholarships offer students a unique blend of financial support and experience working alongside DoD scientists and engineers. Many of these scholarships provide hands-on summer internships that serve as a valuable stepping stone to STEM careers. Students who become part of the DoD scholarship programs also gain access to a valuable professional network, fostering personal and career growth. Read on to explore different DoD STEM scholarships and learn how they can shape your path to success.
SMART Scholarship Program
The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program, funded by DoD STEM, is a significant opportunity for students pursuing STEM degrees. This program is for undergraduates, graduate students, and those in doctoral programs. The benefits are comprehensive, covering full tuition, an annual stipend, and immersive summer internships working alongside scientists and engineers in DoD Research Labs and Engineering Centers. The best part? Graduates are guaranteed employment with the DoD, kickstarting a rewarding STEM career. The application deadline is December 1.
Dellums SMART Scholarship Program
The Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship extends the SMART Program opportunity to rising college freshman. The program covers full tuition, provides an annual stipend, offers valuable internships, and more. It’s a promising start towards a bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. The application deadline is December 1.
Stokes Educational Scholarship Program
High school seniors looking to pursue a bachelor’s degree in computer science or computer/electrical engineering should consider the National Security Agency’s (NSA) Stokes Educational Scholarship Program. This program offers up to $30,000 for tuition and covers living expenses. Plus, just like the SMART Scholarship, graduates are guaranteed a career at the NSA. The application deadline is October 15.
The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) Program, sponsored by the DoD in partnership with the U.S. Army, Navy, and Air Force, encourages original research in STEM and recognizes outstanding student achievements. This opportunity is available to high school students engaged in STEM research. Multiple tuition scholarships and cash awards are available, with application deadlines varying by region.
DoD Cyber Scholarship Program
Cyber is an ever-growing field, and the DoD Cyber Scholarship Program is designed to equip college students with the knowledge and resources they need to excel. Undergraduate and graduate students pursuing cyber-related fields at National Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education are eligible. The benefits are generous, covering full tuition, living expenses, and more. Graduates are guaranteed employment at the DoD, ensuring a secure career. The application deadline is February 1.
National Scholarship Month serves as a timely reminder to explore these valuable opportunities. DoD STEM’s initiatives are not just about financial aid; they are a bridge to a promising career in STEM, a pathway to make a real impact in the field, and a chance to shape the future. Take advantage of these opportunities to build a strong foundation for your STEM journey.
