Are You Interested in Cyber?

Cyber is the encompassing field of all things related to computers and networks, and how they can be used to develop and maintain technology. As cyber is focused around the internet, the field must overcome significant security challenges. Being able to maintain security in cyberspace is critical to protecting computer systems and networks, devices, and data from cyber threats. These threats can cause significant problems for all organizations from local governments, federal departments and agencies, including the DoD, as well as companies across all industries, and our national security overall. The field of cyber is vast, with potential leap-ahead technologies just around every corner, including advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and remote command of machines.

Cyber Jobs in Action at the DoD

Dr. Oscar Perez
“Security for electronic devices is really important,” says Dr. Pérez. “I want to make sure that we have the most prepared team in the world.”

Dr. Oscar Perez

Computer Engineer and Cybersecurity Analyst
U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development, Command Data & Analysis Center

As a DoD cybersecurity analyst, Dr. Oscar Pérez is responsible for network and system security in the event of a cyberattack for the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, Data & Analysis Center. This critical position requires continuous research into developing technologies to ensure the nation’s security interests are protected.

Dr. Pérez sees different cyberattacks every day! He and his team work hard to stay ahead of the attackers by focusing on systems engineering design. They look for gaps in design and work to close them. In 2020, Dr. Pérez was recognized by the DoD Office of the Deputy Director of Defense Research and Engineering for Research and Technology with the Laboratory Advocate of the Quarter Award at dodstem.us/meet/innovators.

Dr. Pérez says that it is continually interesting to him how much can be achieved by electrons simply traveling through cable. When technology went wireless it “blew his mind” so much he decided to pursue a Ph.D. to further understand how to keep unapproved suitors from accessing any system where they are not welcome.

Dr. Pérez not only trains today's workforce but also works with middle and high school students to practice and teach them that there’s no one way to pursue a cybersecurity career. “Security for electronic devices is really important,” says Dr. Pérez. “I want to make sure that we have the most prepared team in the world.”
