Biology is the study of living things. It helps us understand the natural world and the ways its many species function and interact with each other and their environment. Scientists in this diverse field work to protect the natural world and improve quality of life through advances in medicine, agriculture, biotechnology and so much more.
“We study the human genome, which is the way your DNA turns you into you. We also study bacteria and viruses to figure out what people have been exposed to and why they are sick.”

DEVCOM, Army Research Laboratory
The Army Educational Outreach Program's Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS) is a summer STEM enrichment program at Army laboratories for middle and high school students with a focus on hands-on activities in STEM.
Learning Undefeated provides an Emerging Leaders program to introduce high school and college students to biotechnology and connect them with near-peer mentors. Students gain hands-on laboratory experiences and meet STEM professionals from all across the spectrum of STEM careers.
San Diego Miramar College (SDMC) offers numerous degrees and certificates in biotechnology subject areas. Students receive rigorous instruction and valuable lab experiences through internships in local San Deigo laboratories. Summer sessions are offered at no-cost to qualifying students.
